Alvin Wiita

January 31, 1960 - June 22, 2024

Alvin Bruno Wiita, age 64, of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Born on Jan. 31, 1960, to Bruno and Eleanor Wiita, he was raised on the Wiita ancestral farm in East Lake, Minn., until the age of 9, when they moved to McGregor, Minn., where he would reside until age 18. Alvin was the only boy of four siblings; he was the "golden child."

His father began working in Alaska in the early 1970s, and the rest of the Wiita family would visit him in the summer months. This is when Alvin got his taste for Alaska, and he was hooked.

In spring 1977, he began dating the love of his life, Delores (Stifter) Wiita. Together, they moved to Alaska in 1982, and had three children: Bryan, Alex and Cayla.

Alvin began working for his father's construction company that specialized in large civil projects at about the same time he could walk. This ended up being a segue into his career path as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 302 since 1978.

He started his own company in 1990, B&A Concrete, that specialized in mixing concrete onsite. Along with owning and operating his own heavy equipment, he worked on numerous infrastructure projects across the state of Alaska. His winters were spent on the North Slope constructing ice roads and running Rolligons to support the oilfield industry.

His hobbies included talking to his numerous friends on the phone, giving his grandchildren the "claw," hunting, fishing, going on drives and spending time at his "Shack-O-Miniums" at his properties in Kenai and McGregor.

Alvin was generous and loyal, if you knew him there is no doubt he had lent you a hand with something. He was a friend to everyone; there were no strangers in Alvin's life, only friends he hadn't met.

Alvin is survived by his wife of 40 years, Delores Wiita; sons, Bryan Wiita (Kendall Brophy) and Alex Wiita (Savanna Wiita); daughter, Cayla Keene (Brett Keene); five grandchildren, Austin and Colton Wiita, Jovie and Elsie Wiita and Thomas Keene; three sisters, Aileen DeMenge (Jerry DeMenge), Joanne Wiita Gambell and Jeanne Johnson (Jeff Johnson); and niece and nephews, Chad and Clint (Kim) DeMenge and Laura and Drew Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruno and Eleanor Wiita; and brother-in-law, Andrew Gambell.

A memorial to celebrate this extraordinary man's life will be held on Friday, June 28, 2024, at 2 p.m., at Legacy Heritage Chapel at Angelus, 440 East Klatt Road, Anchorage, AK 99515. A celebration of life will be held preceding the memorial at the Wiita Residence, 2745 Porcupine Trail Road, Anchorage, AK 99516.

A live stream of the memorial service will be posted at Legacy Heritage Chapel | Legacy Funeral Homes, legacyalaska.com.

A memorial service is also planned Nov. 2, 2024, at Rice River Senior Center.

In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Alvin, donations may be made to the Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minn.
